Carpet Re-stretching & Wrinkle Removal

Loose, rippled carpet is not just ugly — it is a tripping hazard and it causes premature wear that ruins the look of an otherwise good carpet. Ajax Carpet Service has been re-stretching carpet across Northwest Indiana since 1978 using professional power stretchers, not knee kickers, so the carpet stays flat for years instead of months.

Why carpet ripples in the first place

Carpet stretches over time from foot traffic, humidity swings, sliding heavy furniture, dragging vacuums, and the slow loss of latex bond between the carpet and its backing. Improper original installation — installers who used a knee kicker on a room that needed a power stretcher — is the most common root cause we see. Once a ripple forms, walking over it accelerates wear in that spot and the seams nearby start to fail. Restretching early is the difference between a 30-minute fix and a full replacement.

Power stretching, the right way

We move the affected furniture, detach the carpet from the tack strips along one wall, then use a power stretcher braced wall-to-wall to pull the carpet tight to manufacturer specification. The excess is trimmed cleanly along the baseboard, the carpet is re-secured to fresh tack strip where needed, and the seam is checked for separation. The result is a flat, drum-tight floor that looks the way it did the day it was installed. Most rooms take 30–60 minutes per area.

Combined with repairs when needed

About half the restretches we do also benefit from a quick seam repair or patch in the same visit. We carry seam tape, seam irons, and patching tools on every truck and can fix small burn marks, pet damage, or frayed transitions while the room is already open. If the carpet is too far gone — delaminated backing, severe pad failure, water-damaged subfloor — we will tell you honestly so you don't pay for a stretch that won't hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does carpet restretching last?

A proper power stretch usually holds for the remaining life of the carpet — often 5+ years — as long as the backing is still intact and the original installation wasn't catastrophically bad.

Do I have to move my furniture?

No. We move standard furniture out of the work area and back when we are done. Heavy pianos, large entertainment centers, and waterbeds are the only things we ask homeowners to clear in advance.

Can you stretch carpet on stairs?

Yes, but stair work is repair-style rather than power stretching. We re-secure loose treads, fix bullnose separation, and rebuild worn edges.

How do I know if I need restretching or replacement?

If the carpet face is still in decent shape and the backing is intact, restretching will fix it. If the backing is crumbling, the carpet smells of mildew, or seams are widely separated, replacement is the better call. We will tell you which during a free evaluation.
